[qix mono] is a legible monospace typeface for video games
Dyslexia is a reading disability described as a perceptual processing disorder of graphic signs. The visual crowding effect of letters makes it difficult to match speech sounds to written letters. A specific design of type and its use can facilitate the readability and legibility of a text.
[qix mono] seeks to be an aesthetically pleasing as well as legible synthesis between pixel-art style and accessibility. In order to assess whether the font meets its goal, test subjects with dyslexia continuously accompanied the font design process and evaluated the fonts' legibility. As extended sans serif with increased line spacing, [qix mono] now facilitates ease in reading.
Arcade video games of the 1980s and 1990s initially only permitted fonts to measure a maximum of 8x8 bits due to small screen size. These pixel-based bitmap fonts emerged independently from scalable computer fonts and were often designed by the developers themselves for a specific game.
[qix mono] is inspired by the creative letter designs found in fonts from the Arcade Game Era, and is therefore monospace. The typefaces' uniqueness is rooted in a highly individual character set whose entirety presents as curvaceous pixel font.
[qix mono] originated from the idea of designing a custom typeface for the video game GeoCats. As a 2D pixel-art platformer, GeoCats is a stylistic tribute to Arcade Games from the 1980s and 1990s. What sets GeoCats apart is its integration of cutting-edge technologies and the teams' proximitiy to the player community. The game offers players an exciting geocaching experience that leads through the multi-lay- ered worlds of GeoTerra while holding rewarding surprises for cat lovers.
The team behind GeoCats has a strong philosophy of openness and inclusivity, and is constantly looking for simple yet accessible design solutions to reach the diverse gaming community. In order to invite players to explore the worlds, an easy-to-grasp dialog system that encourages further reading is key. Realising this vision, resulted in the redesign of the dialog boxes and the implementation of [qix mono]. The dialog system thus aims to communicate the games' story in an engaging way without overwhelming the players with text.
